Today we were invited into the wood workshop for the first time apart from a quick tour at the beginning of term. Although I had a small selection of machinery available to me on my foundation course it wasn't an area that I ever entered in. So for me it was the first time using the machines and found the thought of the task daunting. We were asked to bring along our initials in a chosen font. I decided to go with Times New Roman mainly due to the addition of serifs, as any other fonts left the R and H with little interest to them.
I started off using the machines too quickly but learn't that the slower you go the better curves you can create. By the end of the session I felt much more comfortable in the environment and saw the hours fly by. I do regret not spending enough time on the finish on my initials, looking back I could of spent longer on the sanding element. I may go back to the workshop to do so but felt that because these are not the end result they are going to get ruined any way. The second part of the brief asks us to use the wooden letters as stencils, leaving behind a mark. At this current stage I'm not sure what I will be creating from my initials however this does't worry me as I have plenty of projects to get on with until the idea surfaces.
